Mobility Training<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/p>\n

The Askwith School for the Visually Handicapped at Palayamkottai had a strange beginning. Miss Askwith, C.M.S. Missionary was the Manager of the Sarah Tucker Institutions at Palayamkottai.\u00a0 One day in 1888 a blind boy came to the compound to beg.\u00a0 When he found that he had come into a school, he began to beg for education instead of for alms. Pondering his need, Miss Askwith\u00a0dreamed of a school for the blind children.\u00a0 She went home to study how to teach the blind, and in 1890 the first class for the blind children was opened.\u00a0 After carefully and affectionately tending the tree for 18 years in the Sarah Tucker Campus, this noble lady transplanted it to its present place, ‘Tharisanamanai’ in 1908; and it has steadily\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

grown to be one of the biggest of its kind in India, providing general education and vocational training to its inmates, who number 400 at present.<\/p>\n

Pre-School<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Since 1981 – the International Year for the Disabled Persons – much emphasis is being laid on Integrated, Educational Programme for the Visually Handicapped, which is being\u00a0carried out by specially trained teachers in 13 Centres in this Diocese, benefiting 103 visually handicapped persons.<\/span><\/p>\n

Programs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • Pre-School for the Visually Handicapped – About 20 toddlers are being looked after.<\/li>\n
  • Residential High School for the Visually Handicapped – Standard I to X.\u00a0 Government syllabus is being followed.\u00a0 179 students are benefited.<\/li>\n
  • Workshop for the Visually Handicapped –\u00a0 30 young adult Visually Handicapped women and men are weaving handloom clothes like Bed Sheets, Sarongs, Towels and Hand Towels.<\/li>\n
  • Computer Braille Press – This is in an infant stage. The visually handicapped persons print some of their school books, guides and also Psalms.<\/li>\n
  • Residential High School for the Visually Handicapped – Standard I to X.\u00a0 Government syllabus is being followed.\u00a0 179 students are benefited.<\/li>\n
  • Sales Room Counter – The finished products like Bed Sheets, Towels, Sarongs are sold out to the public through this Counter.<\/li>\n
  • Guidance and Counseling – Mental, moral, spiritual and academic guidance and counseling is provided for those in need of it.<\/li>\n
  • Rehabilitation – In some cases the Visually Handicapped persons are rehabilitated according to their needs.<\/li>\n
  • Referral Services – The Visually Handicapped people are referred to other Centres as per their requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Whenever you celebrate your Birthday, Anniversaries or any Festivals in your family, please continue to remember these Poor Visually Handicapped Children and help us. Please introduce this unique Ministry to your friends and relatives.<\/p>\n

    The Third Sunday in Lent is observed as the “Sunday for the Visually Handicapped”.\u00a0 On that Special Day please collect “SPECIAL OFFERINGS” for the welfare of Visually Handicapped in the local Churches and send these offerings to our School. And please remember us in your prayers for all the programs that are being performed in the School and for the welfare works.<\/p>\n
