About
the Pastorate
Eight families became Christians in a small village called "Shampathu"
in 1803 through Rev. Sathianathan. The first church in a thatched building
with palmyrah leaves was built in 1803. The second church was built by Rev. Adaikulam
on 20.11.1830. In June 1920 this Church was demolished and the foundation for
a new church was laid on 5.7.1920 by Rt. Rev. E.H.M. Waller, Bishop in Tirunelveli.
Rev. Canon D. Coilpillai took charge on 26.5.1924 and the present St. John's Church
was built by him and dedicated on 12.3.1928 by Rt. Rev. Norman H. Tubbs, Bishop
